TPU常用的擴鏈劑1,4-丁二醇（MDI），極易吸水， 其純度及水分含量直接影響到實際生產的值， 對最終產品的分子量影響很大。MDI易自聚，若保存不好易生成二聚體。聚合多元醇的水分含量、酸值、羥值等因批次不同而存在差異， 較大程度上影響了TPU性能的穩定性。原料中含有的水分和游離的羧基，一方面與MDI反應， 消耗了部分MDI造成配方設計的不準確；另一方面，反應生成的氣泡起到塑化的作用，最終降低了產品的性能。因此用于合成TPU的原料在使用之前都需要嚴格脫水。
